Port of Corpus Christi prepares for heavy rain, flooding from Tropical Storm Beta

Officials at the Port of Corpus Christi are bracing for heavy rain and the potential for flooding as Tropical Storm Beta continues to creep towards South Texas.

Port officials on Saturday increased its Hurricane Readiness Status to Port Condition 2.

That means port police and security personnel will support the Harbormaster with vessels seeking safe harbor. They also will monitor vessels that have been approved to moor at port facilities.

Also as part of Port Condition 2 status, crews will work to secure port facilities and buildings, and prioritize emergency and storm related work orders.

“We are preparing for significant rainfall and flooding and working to ensure that all Port users adhere to recommended protocols,” Port CEO Sean Strawbridge said. “As always, the safety of our employees, stakeholders and the community remains our highest priority.”

The status change is in accordance with the port’s 2020 Hurricane Readiness Plan.

In a statement, port officials said they continue to monitor possible impact scenarios for the storm, which has triggered warnings from Port Aransas to Port O’Connor. Flash flood warnings also are in effect.

The slow-moving storm was expected make landfall by Monday night. The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi issued tropical storm and storm surge warnings for Port Aransas and all coastal points to the north.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect south of Port Aransas.

Corpus Christi’s port is the nation’s third largest, based on tonnage.

Last year, 6,873 vessels sailed through its waters, delivering 122.2 million tons of cargo. Most of it was crude oil and petroleum.
